Cycling and Hiking across Switzerland

My name is Vinayak Phadatare, I'm an artist by profession and loves to explore and travel.
I have never written a travelogue before however i'm trying for the  first time & trying to keep it simple. 😊

This is about my Swiss travel along with Henry. Henri and I met  in 2004 at my village near Satara which is in Maharashtra state of India. We went around into mountains in Western Ghats just spending a whole day travelling and exploring around villages and there way of living .It was the first time when I was introduced to trekking or hiking. I loved the fact that it was the best way to explore the places.

In recent past, I was in london and Henry invited me to visit to Swiss, his native place and explore this side of the world this time.

He was setting up the plan to hike for a  week and asked me, how is my cycling. I was  like, I did cycle but not in London since its always a travel by train or bus. I was intrigued on what he was planing.

Soon I learnt that he had planned the cycling trip and covering almost 290 km by road. Swiss I knew  is not a flat land, there were uphills downhills. Above all there was a  hike in three mountains. Sounds crazy, right. I did sound same to me as well. I however  didn't gave much thought on details and just said 'yes'. I knew it was now or never as I had time and I had money and luckily universe give you a chance, so just do it.  LOLz
Look at our cycling road map for a week and what we needed to cover.

The preparation was all set in. I started hitting gym on everyday basis to gain the endurance and cycling around 25 to 30 km of avg per day for 2 month before.  Also applied for Visa, tkts and yes leaves. Guess what, they were approved in time.  😉

I had an advantage to fly from UK. The flight time is just 1hr from London to Zurich. Henry came to pick me up with his lovely kids. We met after a decade.

some more travel until we reach our base lake Pfaffikon andit was so quiet and beautiful.

We went for Kayaking a little and visited some places around the lake on the same day of arrival.

Day1 > Cycling to Holzegg and climbing My Mythen

Our actual journey started now. The most important thing was to keep our bags light weight so we carried only small backpack until we get back to  our base at the lake Pfaffikon.

Why cycling?
Most of the European countries are cycle friendly and so does Swiss. Renting a cycle is quite cheap and you can take cycle anywhere in Bus and Train. The cycle routes never go from the main road, rather it take you through the most beautiful places which are not easily accessible by road. In few places, cars are not allowed but cycles are, so if you are in Swiss you will see these kinda of direction boards for cyclist.

our bags

Today our target was to reach Holzegg. There is a Mountain hut where we you can stay and rest for the night and later next day early morning we had planned to climb Mythen .

As we crossed these beautiful small town and finally leaving the population behind.

The uphill climb of the cycling starts now...

you can see the city below we came from. The roads are pretty good and cycling is really fun. But yes you must practice before you attempt any of such trip. Even my legs too gave up in the end of the trip. 😂

After a few hrs of climbing uphill, we took a break in middle for snacks. Cycling really need a lot of energy. You can carry all those energy bars. It really helps you to keep up in such trips.

After few hours of cycling, finally we got the first glimpse of Mount Mythen. You could see it straight in middle of the below image but that was still quiet far in cycling terms.

We took a lunch break at 3 pm in the afternoon at Einsiedeln. Einsiedeln is famous for Einsiedeln Abbey. It's an old church. Such a huge yet quiet & peaceful place it was!

One good thing in Europe is the sun in summer. It Sun rises at 5 am and sets almost at 8 pm, so you get lot of daylight to explore the places around. It is recommended to start early morning.

After this we left for our today's target for Mt Mythen base where we had booked our Stay in a mountain hut. Mountain huts are lodging places in the remote areas of Swiss. You won't get shower facilities but it has good food & washroom, so sure make sure you carry your sleeping bags.

We could see Mt Mythen exactly in front and it looked we were to reach soon to it's base and it started to rain. We took a break to change into rainwear. The weather got really bad, we however continue to cycle again.

I had to switch of my camera here since it was rainy heavily with thunders. Whoa it was scary but we made it in time. We reached base around 7.30 pm of our day 1 and it was almost getting dark. We went to our rooms, changed quickly. We were served with hot soup.

I just went out sat there listening my Music just embracing the moment I was having.

Happiness lies in moments, and while you have it, you're not even aware; only afterwards do you know you were happy. - Luise Rainer

This is just it. I will soon get back with another day in blog. :)
