Explore Wengen (Lauterbrunnen valley) in Switzerland

Read about the previous part of my journey in Descending down from Dossenhütte, Switzerland

We descended from Dossenhut and on the same day we had to cycle till Wengen which was suppose to be our base. I asked Henry to write further part of the journey for me, which he agreed. Read below what he has to say about the experience.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone well that was crazy back there, I am Henry, passionate cyclist - at least until we got kids. Showing Switzerland to Vinayak was a good excuse to escape from family duties; as I am mainly taking care of the kids; beside being a renewable energy investor and consultant. ;)

here today's map where we have to reach ..

As a guide, one has to give priority to the wishes and condition of the guest. Yesterday, when Vinayak looked for a hiking stick after less than an hour and we didn’t proceed fast, a responsible guide might have recommended to turn around. But I wanted to visit the Dossenhütte - I didn’t want to miss it - and I was happy that Vinayak wanted to reach the top as well and was confident to do so. And we made it!

Now the peak of the tour was behind us, and our further plan was "only the standard tourist area, Top of Europe". This name is just a good marketing campaign, there’s a railway taking you from Interlaken via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to the highest railway station of Europe, the Jungfrau Joch at 3454 m above sea level. The mountain range is impressive - but actually there are higher mountains in the Alps.

Rosenlaui - where we started and ended our hike - is really a very quite place. You only reach it by bicycle or a public bus starting in Meiringen. This bus goes to Schwarzwaldalp, where one can change into a bus over the Grosse Scheidegg pass heading toward Grindelwald - where the famous tourism area starts.

the public bus where Vinayak put a cycle at the back went ahead to Grosse Scheidegg Pass waited for me there.

We enjoyed the nice garden restaurant of the old Rosenlaui hotel and saddled our e-bike with a recharged battery. The range of the e-bike is limited, so Vinayak and his e-bike go with the bus up to the Grosse Scheidegg. Anyway I like to cycle with my muscle powered cross bike - I do not visit this beautiful area often!

That's the route for cycling all the way up.

So until I reached Grosse Scheidegg, Vinayak had time to enjoy and record the impressive nature scenery with his drone.

Ohh there he is ..and the pics of the area he got until i was cycling way up.

That's Wettern horn its huge wall and the route which i was cycling Grosse Scheidegg pass.

Our e-bike!

So finally I reached up and Vinayak also met me there. This is where bus drops and you can hike all around these places ,you can see our cycles parked there.

Cycling down towards Grindelwald, we took a break in a cosy hut where they serve home made ice cream. What a nice and quite place!

Before getting into the crowd in the tourist town.

we took some small break for water and peeing, and some photoshoot for both of us

That's me, The Handsome Guy riding my beast. ;)

You can see down there, that is Grindelwald

We cycle and cycle without seen anyone.

Then suddenly a few hundred meters around the Grindelwald train station, there are hundreds of tourists from all over the world - we pass down the valley and leave the crowd behind us. Anyway it is worth to stay some time around here.

The wooden houses you will see lot in these regions

Now from here on it's all the tourist and crowd starts. Grindelwald, Lauterburren valley etc. Still as Vinayak mentioned early we were taking the cycle route and we were away from the highway.
So we started heading toward Lauterburren valley, following the signboard

You see this how cycle route and that road, and straight a head is Lauterbureen valley, place there Vinayak mentioned about a Bollywood movie which was shot there.

We cycled up to Lauterbrunnen, where the tourist crowd popped up again. It further we go out of the nice town center, the less people - which is understandable - we are so much more agile with by bicycle.

We made it to the Lauterbrunnen, yaay!!!

This how it looked. We cycled little further to get good view of the valley and the sun was also setting down other side.

The top view! Lets review the map again to get an idea where we reached .

But we left the bicycles in Lauterbrunnen to take the mountain train up to Wengen, where we booked a night in the "Hotel Belvedere". The name is french for „nice view“, and the hotel is one of the old grand hotels - which wouldn’t fulfill the expectations of wealthy visitors today. The old furniture and style tells its story from past glory - nice - but you can hear your room neighbors - it’s an affordable accommodation today.

You can see on the map Jungfrau Europe's highest point and also Vinayak told me there was movie shot there.

That's Lauterbrunnen down there and Wengen at the top over there we we stayed at hotel.

Wengen is a mountain town with 1100 residents - and up to 10’000 tourists. Tourism started here when tourism started. It is not a mountain town spoiled by tourism - it is a mountain town shaped by tourism. It had 210 inhabitants back in 1783, then the guest house was opened in 1859 and the railway was constructed in 1890, and with the development of tourism, the population reached passed thousand in 1910. The Hotel Belvedere was built in this touristic boom time, 1912. Tourism had a hard time during the two world wars - but it well developed after. We thought of having dinner in an Indian restaurant - but they were far too busy, we would have to wait for an hour… So we went to the local Kebab booth. Turkish migrants brought Kebab - some bread stuffed with meat and salad - to Switzerland. Now you find the handsome Kebab takeaways everywhere - but I tell you this one in Wengen might be the only one where you are served by a real native Swiss :-)

Wengen!

We left our cycle down at Lauterbrunnen valley and reached over here at Wengen station.

The traditional wooden houses.

Finally we reached out hotel in Wengen and it was a time for nice hot shower. The toughest part of Journey over today which was Hiking down from Dossenhut and cycling up this hotel in Wengen yay :)
